Diazepam (Benzodiazapines) for Fear of Flying and other Phobic disorders
Diazepam (Benzodiazapines) for Fear of Flying and other Phobic disorders
The Clinicians at Crouch Oak Family Practice have chosen not to prescribe Diazepam for patients seeking relief from a fear of flying before travel for the following reasons:
1. Diazepam is a sedative that can impair concentration and make you drowsy during the flight, increasing the risk of injury, particularly in emergency situations. This could compromise your safety and that of those around you.
2. Some individuals may experience mood changes or behave in ways they typically wouldn't while taking Diazepam. This can not only affect your safety and that of fellow passengers but may also lead to legal issues.
3. While Diazepam is used to treat certain conditions, it is not intended for preventative use in non-medical situations.
4. National prescribing guidelines, which doctors are required to follow, do not support the use of benzodiazepines for phobias. Prescribing Diazepam for a fear of flying would violate these guidelines and expose the doctor to significant legal risks. Benzodiazepines are only licensed for short-term use in cases of generalised anxiety. If you struggle with such issues, it’s important to seek appropriate mental health care, and it may not be advisable for you to fly.
5. In some countries, Diazepam and similar medications are illegal. Carrying these drugs could lead to confiscation and potential legal trouble with the authorities.
6. Diazepam has a long half-life, meaning it stays in your system for an extended period. This could cause you to fail random drug tests, particularly if your job requires such testing.
We understand that a fear of flying is very real and can be distressing, but there are more effective and safer ways to manage it. We encourage you to consider enrolling in a Fear of Flying course for a long-term solution.
